Sedation Dentistry
Modern dental procedures are usually pretty comfortable and pain-free. Despite this, some patients feel considerable anxiety or fear when it comes to anything related to dentists or dentistry. Fortunately, there are helpful options for this: we can use medication to relax or sedate patients for their dental visits.
Benefits
- Reduces Anxiety: Sedation provides a relaxing and anxiety-free experience for patients who dread dental procedures, making visits more comfortable.
- Minimizes Pain: It effectively manages pain during dental treatments, ensuring patients feel little to no discomfort.
- Allows More Work in Fewer Visits: Patients can often undergo multiple procedures in one visit while sedated, which is efficient and reduces time needed.
- Improves Cooperation: Helps patients who have difficulty sitting still (such as those with physical or mental disabilities) to remain calm and cooperative during treatment.
- Decreases Gag Reflex: Sedation can suppress the gag reflex, making it easier to perform dental work in patients who struggle with this issue.
- Memory Loss: Some forms of sedation (like IV sedation and oral sedatives) can leave patients with little to no memory of the procedure, easing the distress associated with fear of dental treatments.

While some patients are more comfortable in their dental visits using nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, there are also both oral and I.V. sedation options available as well. While all can be very safe options for making dental visits more comfortable for you, knowing your health history is very important to make sure there are no adverse reactions to the medicines.
If you think sedation dentistry will help make your dental visits a more pleasant experience for you or a loved one, please let us know and we can explain in more detail the options we have available in our office.
