Preparing for Tooth Extraction

Many are afraid of having a tooth extraction. This is because many think that this procedure is painful and complicated, however with the right dentist, it does not need to be. If you just know what to expect during the procedure and how to prepare for it, then you really have nothing to worry about. And when your tooth gets to the point when it needs to be extracted, the benefits of tooth extractions done far outweighs the short-term anxiety.

The following are the things to do if you are preparing for tooth extraction:

Know why you need to have your tooth extracted.

First and foremost, you must understand why you have to undergo tooth extraction. This gives you an idea what to expect during the procedure. Some of the common reasons why a tooth is extracted are the following:

  • There is a decayed tooth that poses harm to the rest of your teeth and mouth.
  • A tooth blocks the other teeth.
  • There is a need to make space for an orthodontic treatment.

Make sure if you really need tooth extraction

If you are an adult, your tooth will not grow back once pulled. That is why you must only resort to tooth extraction when there is no other way to treat your dental problem. Ask your oral surgeon if this is the best option for you. This is also the reason why you must first learn why you need your tooth extracted.

Provide medical history

Like other medical procedure, medical history is required prior the tooth extraction procedure. See to it that you tell the dentist about any medications and vitamins you are taking. This is because some medications actually affect the effect of certain anesthetic. Local anesthetics can cause reactions if you are taking certain medicines. Also, let your dentist know about any health issues and allergies you have. This is important to ensure a safer and more successful tooth extraction.

Get X-Rays

In most cases, the dentist will require you to get local X-rays of your mouth. This will allow the dentist to better see and study the area where he/she will be operating. This will lay out a great plan to your tooth extraction. This can be done with a digital x-ray machine, or in some cases a panoramic X-ray.

Arrange a Transportation

Have someone drive you to and back from the dental clinic. It is not advisable for patients to drive immediately after undergoing tooth extraction. This is the procedure may impair your driving ability. So the safe thing to do is to arrange transportation beforehand. The best option is to have a family member or a friend to drive you home and stay with you after the surgery. This is for your own safety.

Fast Before the Surgery

Like in other surgery, standard procedure dictates that you fast the night before the surgery. The dentist will let know how long you need to fast before the surgery. But the average time is eight to 12 hours. To be safe, don’t eat or drink anything after midnight.

Take Medications as Prescribed

If you have an infection or if your immune system is weak, the oral surgeon will likely prescribe antibiotics. Take this before the surgery. If you are really ill, tell your oral surgeon. You might need to reschedule your dental appointment.

Just follow the steps mentioned above and you’re good to go. Also, make sure that you are feeling well during the surgery. And most importantly, have a Mesa dentist whom you can trust and rely on. If you are looking for one, check out East Valley Dental Professionals.
