Most dental problems can be easily avoided by healthy dental habits. Some habits we’ve found effective include brushing twice a day, flossing on a daily basis, using mouthwash properly, eating healthy, and regular checkups with your dentist. Sometimes we could be lazy and start skipping corner on our dental care. Sometimes we are unable to make proactive visits to our dentist or we don’t brush two times a day. A lapse in these habits can result in various dental problems that can lead us searching for an open appointment at a dental office to stop the pain. Here is a common list of dental problems that can be easily avoided if we were to take good care of our dental health.

Bad breath

Gum disease, oral cancer, cavities, dry mouth, and bacteria on the tongue can also result in bad breath. People often think that they can use mouthwash or breath mint to cover up the smell, but it will only get worse if the dental problem continues. Keep in mind that 85% of people with chronic bad breath tends to have an underlying dental condition. If you experience persistent bad breath, it’s best to visit your dentist to find the underlying cause.

Tooth decay

Tooth decay is also known as cavity and is the most common dental issue in the United States. Cavities occur when you eat sugary or fatty food, and you don’t brush properly. When this happens, bacteria forms and release toxic substances that will break down the enamel. This will create a hole that will enlarge over time. At first, we don’t experience any symptoms, so we often ignore it. As time goes by, the hole can get larger resulting in severe pain. This will leave us running to the dentist. This is why it’s important to brush and floss on a daily basis. It is also vital to eat healthy food and visit your dentist every six months.

Gum disease

Gum disease is caused by an infection of the gum. This will lead to inflammation, pain, and swelling of the gum. Alcohol, diabetes, smoking, and dry mouth can result in tender bleeding gums. The two main gum disease is gingivitis and Periodontitis. Fortunately, regular dental checkup and proper dental hygiene can save you from this type of disaster. Keep in mind that if gum disease is left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss.

Tooth erosions

That morning cup of coffee is a major addiction for everyone. Unfortunately, coffee is highly acidic, and it can erode your enamel. Tooth erosions can lead to severe sensitivity and crack up the teeth. As time goes by, you will feel sensitive whenever you take a cup of ice cold or hot water. Luckily, tooth erosion can be prevented by drinking healthy beverages and proper oral hygiene

Mouth sores

Canker sores can form inside of the mouth, and it can be quite painful and annoying. Fortunately, they go away within two weeks. However, there are some sores that can be problematic. For example, blisters or cold sores by herpes simplex virus can occur on the outer lip. These are very contagious, and often come up during times of stress. You will require prescription acyclovir from your doctor to keep it under control. Oral thrush is another mouth sore. This is a yeast infection that often affects infants, diabetics, steroid users, cancer treatment patients, or anyone with a weak immune system.

Unattractive smile

One of the most embarrassing thing about having bad dental hygiene is an unattractive smile. If you have plaques or stain in the front teeth, you will be too embarrassed to say cheese in front of the camera. Luckily, there are teeth whitening agents that can be purchased over-the-counter. You can also go to your dental office for teeth cleaning. Ideally, you will want to clean your teeth twice a year.

Dental emergencies

If you are a sports lover and love playing football or soccer on a daily basis, a dental emergency is bound to happen. A punch to the face, fall to the ground, or a ball to your jaws can result in a tooth fracture. This will require an emergency trip to the dental office to have it fixed.

Tooth sensitivity

If you feel a tingling sensation when you drink something hot or cold, this is a sign of extreme tooth sensitivity. This occurs when the enamels are eroded to the point that the Dentin and nerves are exposed. This can result in discomfort while brushing or slight pressure on the teeth. Tooth abscess and cracked tooth can also lead to sensitive teeth. If you develop sensitive teeth, it’s best to visit your dentist to have it checked out.
