Pain Relief for Toothache

A toothache can cause pain and discomfort. It can be hard to concentrate or do certain activities when you have a toothache. That is why you need to see the dentist. But for the meantime, you can use at home pain relief for toothache.

Remember that these home remedies do not treat the underlying cause of your toothache. They just help you get through the day by temporarily making the pain and discomfort go away. Try these remedies for short-term pain relief:

Cold Compress

When your toothache is associated with swelling, cold compress may help ease the pain. Swelling can be caused by an abscess, tooth decay, infection or other. As to the cause, this is best determined by your dentist. For the meantime, to ease the swelling, Just place the ice pack on the side of your cheek where the tooth hurts.

Saltwater Rinse

This is the general at home pain remedy for toothache, whether your have swelling, other symptoms or not. You just dilute around ½ teaspoon of table salt into a glass of warm water. Just use this salty water like a mouthwash and swish it around your mouth, particularly in the area affected.

Peppermint Tea Bag

This is especially helpful if your toothache affects the gums. Tea bags are useful in numbing the pain and soothing sensitive gums. Instead of using your tea bag for your morning cup of tea, use it for the pain. Just allow the tea bag to become slightly warm by cooling it down before you apply it on the affected area. If you want to use the tea bag like a cold compress, you can also opt for that approach. Just put the tea bag in the freezer for a few minutes and apply it to the area affected.

Clove

Clove has been known to effectively reduce inflammation and numb pain. This is because it contains a natural antiseptic called “eugenol.” You can try two different means of using clove as at home pain relief for toothache. First, put a small amount of clove oil on a cotton ball and dab it on the affected area. Second, make a mouthwash with clove oil as the main ingredient. Just add a few drops of clove oil, with a few drops of olive or other carrier oil, on a small glass of water. With this, swish and rinse your mouth thoroughly.

Vanilla Extract

Vanilla extract contains alcohol and antioxidant properties. For these reasons, it can effectively and naturally help numb the pain and ease the discomfort.  You just dab vanilla extract on a cotton ball and apply it gently to the affected area. Do this a few times a day.

Garlic

Garlic is known for its medicinal uses. It can kill harmful bacteria, which might be causing the toothache due to the presence of dental plaque. It also acts as a natural pain reliever. Just take a garlic clove and crush it. Apply it to the area where the toothaches. For better result, you can add a small amount of salt.

Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers

Taking OCT pain relievers provide short-term relief. They are made to ease the pain and the discomfort for a while. You may take ibuprofen or other medicines of the same kind. For children, acetaminophen is more recommended. However, you must take pain relievers moderately and not abuse it. These are only temporary measures for your toothache.

Above all, do not take dental hygiene for granted. Make sure that you floss and thoroughly brush your teeth.
